Thesetowns were connected by the direct road that ran fromClausentum eastwards along the coast, and the buildingof Stane Street opened up the shortest route betweenthem and London. Leaving the east gate of Chichester, Stane Streettakes a direct course -a little to the east of north-east,and, as Mr. Hilaire Belloc has shown,^ covers the 57miles of its length not in one perfectly straight line, but in a broken one consisting of four great straightsections.
