Tail Races - National parks scenic trails
Summary
In the historic period, a canal was constructed as a power supply for the factory operations. A series of tail races were constructed from the canal leading to the Potomac River. Evidence uncovered during archeological investigation of the area indicates the first constructed trail race likely dates from 1799 to 1801. Other tail races were constructed in the 1840s with the expansion of the Armory.
