Arthur Henri Poole - The Airplane and the Son at Castle Grace
Summary
Colonel R. R. Grubb of Castle Grace, Clogheen commissioned this composite photograph of an airplane and his son. The plane should be easy to identify and should help with the dating. Who was Col. Grubb, and who was the son, posing against the plane?..Apologies for the failure of my "deja vu" yesterday but you know the shot was so good it was worth the second run!..The two main subjects here, the plane and pilot, were quickly identified by B-59 ( /photos/66311327@N05/ ) , BeachcomberAustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) and others. The aircraft is G-ABMW ( http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/G-ABMW.html ) , a Desoutter MKI built in 1931 and retired in the 1940s. The pilot is Richard de Cruce Grubb ( http://thepeerage.com/p61940.htm#i619392 ) a pilot who was born in 1915 and died in a plane crash in 1937. The location, according to Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) , is likely the Grubb homestead ( maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,603014,614493,11,9 ) at Castlegrace, County Tipperary. The date of the two component images is likely in the early/mid-1930s. The date of the composite commission is uncertain - but perhaps commissioned around the time of Richard's tragic death.......Photographer: A. H. Poole..Collection: Poole Photographic Studio, Waterford ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Search/Results?lookfor=A.H.+Poole&type=Author&sort=title&view=grid ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1901-1954. Definitely after 1931 (plane built) and before 1937 (pilot death)...NLI Ref: POOLEWP 4234 ( vtls000594887 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
