Summary

Samuel John Dixon crossing the Niagara Gorge above the Whirlpool Rapids on September 6, 1890. According to "The Photographic Times" (1891), Dixon walked a three quarter-inch wire stretched across the Whirlpool Rapids. The cable was from 300 to 400 feet above the water, and stretched about 400 feet in length. The "perilous journey" was completed in 17 minutes. During his tight rope walk, he performed various antics, including lying at full length across the wire. John C. Hemment, a well known photographer, took pictures of Dixon during his walk.

Dixon walking on a wire rope stretched across the river below Niagara Falls, was made with a plate that I had never before tried. What sort of a plate it proved to be will be determined by looking at the reproduction. While in Buffalo at the late P. A. of A. Convention, Mr. Carbutt gave me samples of his orthochromatic plates. I had exposed all of the plates which I took with meto Buffa
