ythe Albertype Company, of New York. A Torpedo Well. The picture of the torpedo well which Mr. Erastus P.Roberts, of Titusville, Pa., has contributed to this volume ofthe Annual, is an unusually interesting one, not only for thesubject which it depicts, but also for the additional reason thatit is the first photograph of such a subject which has yet beenpublished. The well itself is within a stones throw of thehistoric Drake well, the first well ever drilled for oil, andwas torpedoed, almost to a day, thirty years after that wellmade its first flow. No reproduction, of course, can do fulljustice to a negative of this kind. There is an amount of detailin the spray which it is impossible to preserve. It is moreovera very difficult matter to make the negative without specialapparatus, for, as Mr. Roberts writes us, there is great dangerin photographing a well undergoing the process of torpedoing,not only to the camera, but also to the operators if theyapproach too near the flying stones.

Mullers inimitable instantaneous photo-graphs. • The negative was taken with a Steinheil aplanate and a Thure & Ancy shutter, instruments the lieutenant usesfor all his instantaneous pictures. The specimen before us is by no means an exception to hisgeneral work. Cavalry charges, batteries of artillery in theact of tiring, gymnastic exercises, and a variety of other verydifficult subjects have been photographed by him with equalprecision and details.
