f it,later looking up directions how to get there, etc., and goingthere as soon after that as possible. I have made negatives ofmonuments, buildings, sites of places and buildings, and variousother views in many parts of New Jersey. I rarely go to anypart of the state without taking a camera with me for the par-ticular purpose of being prepared in case I came across a placeof this kind. I am always looking for such places, particularly 45 places that are obscure, and but little heard of. One can alsomake a specialty of local views, old buildings in ones owncity, public buildings, that are about to be razed to make roomfor a modern one, very old houses connected with the history of the town, etc. While many of these plates may have no great value at thepresent time, one never knows how soon they may have; a firemay remove all traces of an old place; alterations may bemade; many other things may occur that will give a negativeof this description a value many times the cost of the plate.

A plate may, to-day, be worth no more than the price of oldglass, to-morrow it might bring $5, $10, even $25, but, restassured, that time will make all such negatives worth morethe oder they are—especially after a building has disappeared. Then, if one will look up the history of these places—and makethis a habit—one will ofttimes learn much that is new to him.and would never have known if he had not taken such a view. This is a subject that will give a person plenty to do on awinters night, when he can sit comfortably by the fire. Lookup a history, study it, and you can pick out many places tliatduring the spring and summer you can get to. 46 Do not be selfish and keep these prints for yourself, butmake up a set and present this to the nearest Historical So-ciety. They wil be only too glad to make an addition totheir, ofttimes, meagre collection of prints. Fig. I is not a picture one would look at a second time, except for the title, which
