rve that in the Daguerreotype the figureis reversed, as in a negative viewed from the film side. Toreverse this, if desired, expose the plate with the film sideaway from the lens, or, from the negative made in the usualway, make a reversed positive by transmitted light and anegative from this. From Daguerreotypes, made by himself and others, thewriter has made many copies and has found the work of muchinterest. For prints there is, of course, the usual wide choicein papers, but, for these enlargements, he has found roughsepia platinum quite satisfactory. The portraits used as illustrations are copies made by thewriter from Daguerreotypes. Those of General and LadyWashington are from paintings, and are somewhat enlargedin copying. The original picture of Lady Washington wasdescribed by Mr. G. W. P. Custis, in 1848, as a most exquisiteminiature. The full-sized portrait of General Washington, from which the Daguerreotype was taken, was declared byMr. Custis, to be a very fine likeness. 66
