ALICE BOUGHTON. 197
Alice Boughton was an American photographer born on 14 May 1866 in Brooklyn, New York. She was known for her portraits of women and children and her use of soft-focus techniques. Boughton studied art at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and later worked as a retoucher for a photography studio. She eventually opened her own studio in New York City and became known for her portraits of prominent artists and writers, including Robert Louis Stevenson and Mark Twain. Boughton's work has been exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Royal Photographic Society in London and the Paris Salon. She was also a member of the Photo-Secessionist movement, which sought to elevate photography to the level of fine art. Boughton was one of the few women photographers to achieve commercial success during her lifetime. In addition to her portraits, Boughton also photographed landscapes and still lifes. She died on 21 June 1943 in Brookhaven, New York. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Portrait Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art, among others.
