Theperfect print may be made from a decidedly imperfectnegative. One point has not been touched upon—the question of dif-fusion need give us little concern. The same principles of lib-erality which apply to lighting also govern this subject. As inlighting, it is well to remember that extreme will give bizarreand striking effects often, but good likenesses seldom. Thehard microscopic definition of the anastigmat will be avoided byeveryone with sensibilities: the danger lies at the other ex-treme. The art director of one of the highest class NewYork magazines referred humorously to some of his contem-poraries, saying that they believed that every photograph whichwas not sharp was artistic; this may seem far-fetched, but itis a tendency of the photographer to regard it as the truth, es- io8

To summarize the present day portrait photographer: hearranges and lights his subject in a characteristic manner, re-membering that anything which can be seen can be photo-graphed; adjusts his exposure properly to render the tones forwhich he is working, and develops just as carefully to suit hisexposure; he prints in such a manner as to retain on paper thequality secured in the negative.
