THE CLUMBER SPANIEL. 307 Prom the former's remarks it would appear that this presumed Clumber is not only the original Land Spaniel, but also the i^rogenitor of the Setter. In Daniel's "Rural Sports" we learn that the immediate ancestors of the present race were given by a French noble- man, the Due de Nouailles, to a Duke of Newcastle, prob- ably about two centuries ago. The name is derived from a seat of the Dukes of Newcastle, situated in Nottingham- shire, (/lumber, where tliey were domiciled from the outset.
