THE BLACK PANTHER. This member of the Panther'species diffevs from the others principally in the dark hue of its fur and the consequent indistinctness of its spots. It is a'restless hunter, killing not only mammals but also birds. The animal in the picture is represented in its native Sumatran jungle, ready to seize an aquatic bird which has become aware, too late, of its enemy's stealthy approach. (Felts melas.) (117)
