The chamber also contained a calibrated capillary barometer for the measurement of absolute pressure (Schneiderman and Feder, 1954). The air-filled tank was compressed with carbon monoxide, the final pressure being recorded on the tank gauge and the capillary barometer. The latter was read, at three-day intervals and the oxygen consumed by the animals replaced by the addition of a corresponding amount of oxygen.
