Kitty Hawk is returning to the United States for decommissioning after 47 years of service, 10 of which have been in Japan and will be replaced by the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) this summer. The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
