Sir William Chambers - The Casino in Marino

description

Summary

One of my very favourite buildings in Dublin, a love nest with a view, a "trompe l'oeil" in the heart of the capital!..This is different, usually we are dealing with new buildings which have dis-improved over the years. Whereas we can see from the Street view link supplied by sharon.corbet ( /photos/129555378@N07/ ) that this building looks 100% better than it did 100 years ago - well done OPW...Sharon also links us to a short history of the Casino in Marino again thanks to our friends at the Dictionary of Irish Architects www.DIA.ie ( http://www.DIA.ie ) ..The following is from Heritage Ireland (I found this myself!!)..The Casino was designed by Sir William Chambers as a pleasure house for James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont. It is one of the finest 18th century neo-classical buildings in Europe The Casino, meaning "small house", surprisingly contains 16 finely decorated rooms, endlessly rich in subtlety and design. It is a remarkable building - both in terms of structure and history...The Casino is located at Marino, just off the Malahide Road and only three miles north of the centre of Dublin...
