Thus, a tenant on any floormay place his mail in one of these chutes and have it taken to the Post Officewithin half an hour afterward. Eighteen hundred telephones are in servicethroughout the Building, a greater number than is used in a city of 30,000inhabitants. The average daily traffic is 29,000 calls, totaling 8,700,000messages per year. Frequently visitors to the Observation Gallery and others ask interestingquestions with regard to the means which have been devised to make a buildingof this height entirely safe before the elements.
