The poorwhite woman, as the party halted, sank to the groundcompletely exhausted, her feet bleeding and blistered fromthe hot sun and rocks, her face swollen and eyes bloodshotfrom weeping and her arms almost completely paralyzedfrom the labor of carrying her infant during the longjourney. About her gathered a group of squaws who seemedto delight in subjecting her to every conceivable form oftorture. The poor little babe, with its neck chafed by therawhide thong which had encircled it during the latter halfof the day was crying and sobbing bitterly from pain andhunger. This appeared to anger the inhuman wretches,and, soon a large ugly squaw seized the child by the feet,pulled it violently from its mothers arms, and turning to atree which stood near by, with one savage blow beat itsbrains out upon the sturdy pine. The mother leaped to her feet and with a cry of anguishsprang torward her child, her arms outstretched and herswollen, bloodshot eyes reflecting the misery within her
