rism •*R, which is offlint and ia totally reflecting. A handleis attached to the prism by which it ^ay be ao placed that the ray of light may bafocusod on tha center of the concave nirrorM. The mirror is supported on three points, one of which ia stationary (C-Fig.2) page 15.The piston reducing mechanism is connected toB while the pressure diaphram is connectedto A. Since the flexure of the diaphram isnot proportional to the pressure in the cylinders, the post A B is curved so that the motionof the mirror in a vertical direction ia pro-portional to the press-ore, which is conimunicatedto the mirror through the flexible copper tubingT, and the diaphram D which actuates thelink C. The diaphram is of steel and hasbeen calibrated by the makers. (See page 44for calibration curve). The copper tubingshould be aa short aa practicable, for theextra tubing will materially increase theclearance volume of each cylinder. The horizontal movement of the mirroris caused by the nechaniom shown at G**.

M J ■ 1 5 A flexible shaft drives the planetary gear Gwhich meshes ?rith the pinion to which thecrank and the rod F are connected. Therelative ratio of the crank to the connect-ing rod is the same as that used on theordinary auto engine. The pinion G isoperated through a worm gear by the knurledscrew S. The instrument has been madeso that the obliquity of the connecting rodis compensated for, if the explosion end ofthe card is on the left side. The flexibleshaft is connected to the engine shaft by auniversal coupling. Considerable difficulty was at firstexperienced in getting an image on the photo-graphic plate. Finally, by using magnesiaribbon which was ignited by an acetylene flameand developing the plate by a special method, fairly satisfactory resulto wore obtained.Sigma dry plates, manufactured by the LumioreN. A. Co., Ltd., were used in Premo plateholders, remodeled to fit the raanograph box. The plates were four inchea by five inches andwere exposed for fifteen seconds. Idealh
