Doff in relief, on a clay tablet. 294 THE SECOND MONARCHY. Chap. II. Cows, oxen, sheep, and goats are frequent; butthey are foreign rather than Assyrian, since theyonly occur among the spoil taken from conqueredcountries. The dog is frequent on the later sculp-tures ; and has been found modelled in clay, and alsorepresented in relief on a clay tablet. Their characteris that of a large mastiff or hound, and there is abun-dant evidence that they were employed in hunting.^ If the Assyrians domesticated any bird, it wouldseem to have been the duck. Models of the duck are common, and seem gene-rally to have been usedfor weights.^ The birdis ordinarily representedwith its head turned uponits back, the attitude ofthe domestic duck when Assyrian Duck (Nimrud). aslcep.
