The Fort Sumter Garrison Flag - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
The garrison flag was flown over Fort Sumter from January to April 1861, then re-raised over the fort on April 14, 1865, the four year anniversary of its surrender to the Confederacy. Today this delicate artifact is on exhibit at the Fort Sumter Visitor Center in Charleston. The flag is stored in a specially designed case to help preserve the fabric. Each day a different window into the case is opened, allowing a small section of the flag to be viewed.
