The Golden Gate was built by the Vladimir princely masters in 1164. During the time of Andrei Bogolyubsky, the city was surrounded by an extended shaft and had seven entrance gates (Golden, Copper, Irininy, Silver, Ivanovo, Torgovaya and Volzhskiye). Up to now, only the most ceremonial Golden Gate has reached. Ipatiev Chronicle reports that the prince of their "commit" gold, bearing in mind that they were covered with sheets of gilded copper, brightly shining in the sun and amazed imagination of contemporaries. From the gate passed a bridge that led out of town. The height of the arch reached 14 meters. The massive oak gates of the gate, hanging on wrought hinges, adjoined the arch bridge still preserved today. In the center of the upper defensive platform of the gate was built the Gate White Church Church of the Robe of the Mother of God.

Золотые ворота были построены Владимирскими княжескими мастерами в 1164 году. Во время Андрея Боголюбского город опоясывался протяжённым валом и имел семь входных ворот (Золотые, Медные, Иринины, Серебряные, Ивановские, Торговые и Волжские). До наших дней дошли лишь самые парадные Золотые ворота. Ипатьевская летопись сообщает, что князь их золотом «учини», имея в виду, что они были покрыты листами золоченой меди, ярко блестевшей на солнце и поражавшей воображение современников. Через рвы от ворот проходил мост, выводивший за город. Высота арки достигала 14 метров. Массивные дубовые створы ворот, висевшие на кованых петлях, примыкали к арочной перемычке, сохраняющейся и ныне. В центре верхней оборонительной площадки ворот была возведена надвратная белокаменная церковь Положения риз Богоматери.
