KINZIE HOUSE. Mr. Kinzie and his family crossed the river in boats, and took refuge inthe fort, to which place Mrs. Burns and her infant, not a day old, wereconveyed in safety to the shelter of the guns of Fort Dearborn, and therest of the white inhabitants fled. The Indians were a scalping party ofWinnebagoes, who hovered around the fort some days, when they dis-appeared, and for several weeks the inhabitants were not disturbed byalarms. Chicago was then so deep in the wilderness, that the news of thedeclaration of war against Great Britain, made on the 19th of June, 1812,did not reach the commander of the garrison at Fort Dearborn till the 7thof August. Now the fast mail train will carry a man froni New York toChicago in twenty-seven hours, and such a declaration might be sent,every word, by the telegraph in less than the same number of minutes.
