THE NEW CUINESE POTATO. This new potato was, severalyeai-s since, transmitted, alongwith other useful and promisingagricultural plants, by M. de Mon-tigny, who is C nsul for France atthe Port of Shanghai, in NorthernChina. The name which he be-stowed upon it was that of Dios-corea japonica; but it has beenconsidered by Professor Decaisne,of the Parisian Museum of NaturalHistory (Jardin des plantes), andacknowledged by Professor Lindleyand others, that Dioscorea batataswould not only be a more popularand familiar, but a more appropri-ate name, seeing that although theplant may in its origin be Japan-ese, of its cultivation in that darkinterior we know literally nothing;whilst its culture in the northernparts of China, and in latitudesassimilated to our own in point ofclimate, being a fact quite acces-sible in all its details, ought not tobe submerged under the name thatassociates it with the very exclu-sive territory of Japan.
