The hospital morgue, Island 3 - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
This morgue was added in 1936, this is a room behind the powerhouse and next to the mattress sterilizer on Island 3. The previous morgue was in a small building near the Pharmacist’s house. This morgue also has an “Autopsy Theater” that allows other doctors and medical professionals to observe the autopsy as it happens. This was important because there were quite a few strange diseases that passed through Ellis Island and ended the lives of some of the immigrants. (NPS Photo)
