subsequently brought back to Englandby Mr. Lloyd, of Ware, and only died com-paratively recently. Mr. Phillips consideredthat his son Rivington Bluegown was thebest-coloured Cocker he ever bred, and hasnever ceased to regret that he sold him togo to Canada. However, he exacted acertain measure of compensation from theDominion, when he imported Toronto, ablack dog, whose services at the stud have THE SPORTING SPANIEL. 297 been extremely useful, principally in im-proving and strengthening the heads of thebreed, which at one time were getting ratherweak and inclined to snipiness. Mr. J. M.Porters dog Braeside Bustle, whose nameis to be found in the Stud Book for 1896,was a very notable dog, as, besides winning beautiful bitch whose union with BraesideBustle produced Blue Peter, a most success-ful sire of late years, and Braeside Judy, the dam of some of the best of our modernCockers. During the last few years Mr.R. de Courcy Peeles kennel has easilyheld the pride of place in this variety.

THREE GENERATIONS OF MR. R. DE C. PEELE S BLUE ROAN COCKERS. CH. BEN BOWDLER (father). CH. BOB BOWDLER (son), andCH. DIXON BOWDLER (grandson). a number of prizes himself, he is responsiblein one way or another for most of thebest coloured Cockers of the present day.His blood was of the very best, since hissire Toots went back in a direct line toChampion Obo, and his dam Braeside Bizzwas a great-granddaughter of ChampionFop. Some of the best dogs owned or bredby Mr. Porter were Braeside Bob, a lemonroan sold to America, whom I saw at theWestminster Kennel Clubs show in NewYork as lately as 1904, Braeside Betty, a Most of my readers are no doubt familiarwith the many beautiful Cockers whichhave appeared in the show ring and carriedoff so many prizes under the distinguishingaffix Bowdler. His kennel was built upon a Braeside foundation, so that Mr.Porter can fairly lay claim to a certainamount of credit for its success, and hascontained at one time or other such flyersas Ben Bowdler, Bob
