Tlic larj;cTpicture is of Barnard, the Government photographer underCaptain O. M. Poe, Chief Engineer of the Military Division of thejSIississippi. Barnard was engaged to take photographs of thenew Federal fortifications being constructed under Captain Poesdirection at Atlanta, September-October, 1864. Captain Poefound the old Confederate line of defense of too great extent tobe held by such a force as Sherman intended to leave as garrisonof the town. Consequently, he selected a new line of muchshorter development which passed through the northern part ofthe town, making necessary the destruction of many buildings inthat quarter. Barnard ishere at work sensitizinghis plates in a light-prooftent, makinghis exposures,and developing immedi-ately within the tent.
