MAJOR-GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST, CS.A. General Forrest was oneof the born cavalry leaders. Daring and resourceful in every situation, he and his hard-ridingraiders became a source of terror throughout the Mississippi Valley. He was born near the site of Chapel Hill,Tennessee, on July 31, 1821, attended school for about six months, became a horse and cattle trader, and slavetrader at Memphis. He cast in his lot with the Confederacy and entered the army as a private in June. 1861.In July he organized a battalion of cavalry, of which he became lieutenant-colonel. He escaped from Fort Donel-son when it surrendered to Grant, and as brigadier-general served in Kentucky under Bragg. Transferred toNorthern Mississippi in November, 1863. Forrest was made major-general on December 4th of that year, andat the close of the following year was placed in command of all the cavalry with the .\rmy of the Tennessee. OnJanuary 24, 1865, he was put in command of the cavalry in .\labama, Mississippi,
