came out of the rock and consumedthem. Then the angel vanished away, and Gideon knew by this sign that he wasnot a man. Gideon was now frightened, and he thought as he had seen an angel thathe should die, but God spoke to his mind, Thou shalt not die. AndGideon was then satisfied, and built an altar to praise God, and he called itJehovah-shalom, which means, The Lord peace; or, as we understand it, The Lord send peace. On the same night God commanded Gideon to throw down his fathersaltar, built to the false god, Baal; and to cut down the grove that wasplanted round it, and to build an altar to him, and sacrifice his fathersbullock upon it. So Gideon did so by night, and took ten of his fathersservants to help him. In the morning the men of the city saw what Gideon had done, but theydid not know who did it. Now the Midianites and the Amalekites pitched in the valley of Jezreel,and the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew the war-trumpet, and called many of the tribes of Israel to help him. And hewould fain know if God was pleased with what he was doing, and so heasked God for two signs. First, he would put a piece of fleece of wool offa sheeps back upon the floor, and if the wool were all wet, and the floordry, he should believe that God was with him to help him ; and the fleecewas so wet that he wrung a bowlful of water out of it, while the floorwas dry. Still, Gideon did not know what to do, and he asked God foranother sign, and that was to be the reverse of this, for the fleece should bedry and the floor wet; and God did so that night: for it was dr
