Summary

For most of our old photographs the vegetation will have increased in the area since it was taken but in this case hope and suspect that it has actually reduced. An old overgrown building, in a marshy, reed covered field with a distinctive high cross should be easy to find?..With lightening reflexes, O Mac ( /photos/91549360@N03/ ) identified this as the church and high cross of the monastery (founded in the 6th century) on Inishmacsaint, Lough Erne ( Inishmacsaint ) . The chaps at the base of the cross really do give some sense of scale.......Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton..Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence..Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000034077 ) ..Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883..NLI Ref: STP_1430 ( vtls000564744 ) ..You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
