Thirteen-lined ground squirrel - Public Domain image, National Parks Gallery
Summary
In 1843, the naturalist John James Audubon and his illustrator Isaac Sprague drew at least one sketch of two thirteen-lined ground squirrels at Fort Union Trading Post. If one looks closely at their sketch--there's a print on display in the park's museum--one can see historic Fort Union in the background between the facing rodents.
