Summary
“All of the buildings are connected by means of corridors and covered ways so that persons, baggage and necessary supplies may be transported from one building to another in an efficient manner without exposure to inclement weather.” (A Study of the Housing Facilities at the U.S. Immigration Station at Ellis Island, N.Y. National Archives, 1923, p.4 On Island 3 the contagious disease hospital buildings and isolation wards were interconnected (and organized) by means of 1 2-story corridors used primarily by staff. This Passageway of five sections (9A through 9E) was built in several phases between 1909-14 and extends about 700 feet. (NPS Photo)
