Toledo Zoo herpetologist Peter Tolson, Ph.D., director
Summary
Toledo Zoo herpetologist Peter Tolson, Ph.D., director of conservation and research, gently grasps a sedated Cuban boa before rolling the snake over for surgery to insert a radio transmitter necessary for tracking the threatened species on Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Oct. 13. Tolson and soldiers assigned to South Atlantic Veterinarian District Command Detachment at NAVSTA GTMO replace the transmitters before the battery expires and check the reproductive condition of the snake as well as document the general health of each individual. The work is part of a study to better understand the threatened species. JTF Guantanamo provides safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees, including those convicted by military commission and those ordered released by a court. JTF Guantanamo provides support to the Office of Military Commissions, to law enforcement and to war crimes investigations.
