This illustration entitled "Anti-Quayites Say He Is Down, But the Bout is Not Yet Over", by cartoonist Clifford Berryman, which appeared in the Washington Post on January 6, 1899, shows Senator Matthew Quay, a powerful political boss from Pennsylvania since his election in 1887, in battle with a member of the anti-Quay coalition formed as the result of Quay's being indicted for misappropriation of state funds in 1898.
