a Central is known as the eleven million dollar boule-vard, and is certainly one of the finest streets in the world. It isnot as yet fully completed. It extends for a mile, starting at a sec-tion of the city called the Maua and continuing through the heart ofthe capital to the Monroe Palace. It is one hundred and five feetin breadth, with wide pavements of mosaic in unicjue designs. Thereare rows of Brazilian palms along each curb and one down the center,which gives an appearance somewhat similar to a French boulevard.Fine buildings of really artistic design line either side. Among theseare the National Library, the Opera House, the Municipal Buildingand the offices of the leading newspapers. This magnificent streetwas constructed in an incredibly short space of time conisdering thework which had to be accomplished. Its site was a tangle of narrow,ill-smelling streets and lanes which was an eyesore to the city as wellas positively deleterious to the health of the inhal)itants. The mu-
