United States Army, Caisson Platoon, 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) leads a joint service casket team, carrying retired Gen. David C. Jones to his final resting place Oct. 25, 2013, at Arlington National Cemetery, Va. Jones served four years as chief of staff of the Air Force from 1974 to 1978 until he was appointed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff June 21, 1978. As chairman, Jones served longer than all of his predecessors, serving from 1978 to 1982. During this time, he was responsible for executing the decisions of the National Command Authorities regarding worldwide readiness and employment of combat forces of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
