U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' contractors begin construction
Summary
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' contractors begin construction on temporary housing sites near Joplin Regional Airport, Joplin, Mo. Construction began July 7 on two community group sites that can accommodate up to 346 manufactured homes. Contractors are putting in place temporary gravel pads for housing foundations, and will construct emergency storm shelters, bus shelters, mailbox units, gravel and asphalt roadways. They will also install utility infrastructure including a sewer system and water lines. The Corps envisions creating a community with an environment in which people will want to live, not just sleep. The Corps is tracking a need for 622 temporary housing units and has identified a possible third site for additional units.
