U.S. Marine Corps Rct. Zachary Dohner, Platoon 3060, India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, surfaces after shedding his gear underwater during basic water survival training June 26, 2017, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits must shed the gear in less than 10 seconds while underwater. Dohner, 21, from Pedricktown, N.J. is scheduled to graduate Aug. 25, 2017. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 19,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 12 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
