The original finding aid described this photograph as: [Complete] Scene Caption: US Marine First Lieutenant Jonathon Kehr (Right), Landing Support Detachment, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, Okinawa, Japan, departs the Landing Craft Air Cushioned (LCAC) LC 81, from Assault Craft Unit-5 (ACU-5) Detachment West Pacific, Sasebo, Japan, onto a Gogu Beach for the D-Day Mobile Fuel Distribution System (DMFDS) concept demonstration in support of FOAL EAGLE 2000. The DMFDS is a Force Warfighting Lab (FWL) sponsored and Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded project which demonstrates new techniques in the first ever transfer of fuel from the sea to land. FOAL EAGLE is the largest Joint and Combined field training drill conducted annually in South Korea, running from October 25th to November 3rd. About 25,000 U.S. troops (Not shown) will take part in the drill, including active duty, Reserve and National Guard troops from bases in the United States and elsewhere in the Pacific.
