Between 1900 and 1960, Iron Knob was the nation's main producer of Iron Ore. Iron ore was first mined here by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company (BHP), marking the beginning of Australia's steel industry. Iron Knob is located about 50 kilometres North-West of Whyalla in South Australia.
