Kobell was born in Mannheim in 1749. He began his artistic training at the age of 15 with the painter Johann Jakob Müller in Mannheim. He later studied under the famous German painter Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Frankfurt. Kobell became known for his landscapes, genre scenes and animal paintings. He was particularly adept at capturing the movement and energy of horses, and his equestrian paintings are highly regarded. He was also a talented etcher and produced a number of prints during his career. In addition to his artistic activities, Kobell was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and was known for his contributions to the fields of mineralogy and geology. Kobell died in Munich in 1822, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished German painters of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
