War Department Tablet, Antietam National Battlefield
Summary
In 1890, Congress passed legislation to preserve and mark the lines of the Civil War battle on Antietam Battlefield. Many of the monuments and markers that were erected, signifying battle positions or fallen soldiers, were paid for by states or veterans groups.
The 51st New York Monument and War Department tablets are examples of commemoration in the landscape.
