satisfy any one but a fish hog.My last years observations came to this:That when the fish are biting plentifully, deep trolling will produce the greater catch, and that when the fish are biting but poorlyfor deep trolling, surface trolling in theshallower waters is about as efficient—al-ways providing that one knows where to goand how to fish. caught four, and this about 4 p. m., an hourat which I had not heretofore been success-ful. I ascribe this as the reason for mygood luck: the rains wash into the lake fromthe shore, and also by means of smallstreams, quantities of the food upon whichthe fish feed. Whenever, therefore, it rains, following their instinct the fish seek theedges of the lake in search of food. Sometimes it is of benefit to us to have thecorners of our conceit rounded with the raspof defeat. In telling fish stories it is to beexpected that the other fellow will followwith one exceeding our own. We doubt himin the same proportion that he doubted us. :\60 WESTERN FIELD n
