description

Summary

1996 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: Woodland Plantation, though forgotten in River Road plantation tourism, remains one of the most indelible reminders of the Old South in the American psyche. Its anonymous fame has been confirmed only in the last fifteen years by local architecture historians and the Southern Comfort Corporation. Woodland is the plantation of the Currier and Ives print "Home on the Mississippi" and the label of Southern Comfort bourbon. While not on the National Register of Historic Places or a National Historic Landmark, Woodland is the symbol of the ante-bellum South and is of Register and Landmark status.
