U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack asks Gwinnett Technical College Dr. Dana Schneider, about the blender and sprouting potatoes in the BioScience Laboratory's fume hood, in Lawrenceville, GA, on Friday, March 20, 2015. Secretary Vilsack is visiting with faculty and students from an Integrative Biology Class, that is beginning a project to study the kinetics (properties) of the enzyme tyrosinase (ty-rose’-n-ase) that they will be isolating from potatoes. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and Labor Secretary Tom Perez, today announced the recipients of $200 million in competitive awards to fund and evaluate pilot projects in 10 states to help Supplemental Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP) participants enter careers and work toward self-sufficiency. Georgia is one of several other states that have been selected to test innovative ways to help the unemployed or underemployed transition off of government food assistance programs and compete for positions in today’s job market.
