Trade has been revolutionized by the cable noless than by steam, as through it the market prices of theworld are daily reported in the newspaper press. In 1867 the possessions of Russia in America were boughtby the United States for 17,200,000. The territory amountedto about 577,390 square miles.^ It was thought by many atthe time a very foolish enterprise, and Secretary Seward, towhom the purchase was largely due, was made the object ofmuch ridicule and chaffing.
