Thepeople are constantly using its waters for irriga-tion ; consequently this river is larger at its headthan at its mouth. For seven thousand years tra-dition and the records of man give us evidence thatthe Nile has been an unchangeable river. Theoldest nation and the first of the human family ofwhich the world has any reckoning, lived in thisvalley and dwelt upon its fertile banks. Ages andages, no doubt, have passed since this wonderfulinstrument in the hands of nature has been atwork robbing the marshes and valleys of theAbyssinian mountains of their rich mud andcarrying it thousands of miles down, forming newland, enriching the soil of the old and making thepeople happy. WE are now in old upper Egypt, once theland of the proud Thebans whose citiesand temples were the envy of suchcountries as Greece and the Roman Empire. An-cient Memphis in lower Egypt, and the grand Cityof Thebes, were once jealous rivals. Wars ensued, dreadful carnage and bloodshedfollowed in the train of the conquerors; dynastiesfell and empires passed away in the conflicts thatraged from time to time. Skilled laborers weremade slaves, and their religion changed by thepower of the sword; their temples, the huge monu-ments built of granite and stone, are the only tracesleft now by which we may read something of thebeauty and power of these people of so manycenturies ago.
