CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Near the Vehicle Assembly Building, or VAB, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, old roller shaft bearing assembly parts that were removed from crawler-transporter 2, or CT-2, have been discarded. Inside the VAB, new roller shaft bearings will be installed on CT-2. Work continues in high bay 2 to upgrade CT-2. The modifications are designed to ensure CT-2’s ability to transport launch vehicles currently in development, such as the agency’s Space Launch System, to the launch pad. The Ground Systems Development and Operations Program office at Kennedy is overseeing the upgrades. For more than 45 years the crawler-transporters were used to transport the mobile launcher platform and the Apollo-Saturn V rockets and, later, space shuttles to Launch Pads 39A and B. Ability to recite from memory the constitution wins war veteran a job. Washington, D.C., Sept. 13. Harry E. Wilhelm, 43, a World War veteran and unemployed huckster of York, PA., won himself a job today on his ability to recite from memory the 6,757 words of the Constitution and Amendments. In his quest for work, Wilhelm called on Rep. Sol Bloom, Chairman of the United States Constitutional Sesquicentennial Commission, to whom he announced he was the only man in the world who could recite from memory the Constitution. Interested but skeptical, Bloom promised Wilhelm a job if he could back up hi claim. With Bloom checking the words, Wilhelm made good on his boast and is now an employee of the U.S. Constitution Sesquicentennial Commission mail room. 9/13/37

Soldier inspecting new bantam truck at Fort Myer, Virginia. This small light truck, known officially as the "Truck 1/4-ton 4x4," is a small, low-silhouette, narrow-tread, 4-wheel drive car without armor protection, which is designed to carry three men and their individual weapons. It can also be used as an ammunition carrier. It is not currently contemplated that the vehicle itself will be armed. If this vehicle proves satisfactory under the exhaustive tests now in progress, its place in the Calvalry Team will be to furnish road and cross-country transportation for small rifile units whose normal function would include reconnaissance, security and dismounted combat. Frequently these rifle units will be employed with mechanized cavalry elements, such as Scout Car platoons, to extend the reconnaissance and supplement the fire power of larger units. This newly developed 1/4-ton truck has many advantages over motorcycles and moto-tricycles: it can carry three men, where the others are designed for two; it has more cross-country ability and ruggedness than the motorcycles; it is relatively quiet; its light weight permits manhandling; it's to be employed to carry either three men or a cargo weapon; it's easily concealed. With a few exceptions, these small vehicles will replace on a one-for-one basis the motortricycles and motorcycles with side cars now in use

Mr. Anthony B. Thomas, one of the leading druggists of San Leandro and also a three-term city coucilman, is of Portuguese descent. His father, a whaler who was born on the Flores Island of the Azores, and his mother came to the United States and settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts eighty-five years ago. In 1882 the entire family came overland to the East Bay area and established their home in San Leandro which was fast becoming a thriving Portuguese community. Mr. Thomas' father wanted him to be a whaler, but after finishing high school, he decided that he would prefer to be a druggist and studied to that purpose. The people of San Leandro, in recognition of his ability as a leader, have elected him three times a member of the five-man council board. Mr. Thomas says, "We are all Americans now and I am proud to be part of a democratic government and always want to do my share on any democratic government and planning board."

Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service. Pretty as her picture is this young woman in the trim uniform that enlisted U.S. Navy WAVES will wear this winter. The smartly styled, comfortable uniforms are in the traditional "Navy blue" with a soft rolled brim hat. Women between the ages twenty and thirty-six with a high school education or its business school equivalent are eligible, providing they meet physical and aptitude requirements. After training, they will receive rating and pay commensurate with their experience and ability. The pay, incidentally, will be exactly the same as that for men in the same rating, plus allowances. The Navy particularly desires women trained as general clerks, secretaries, stenographers, duplicating machine operators, typists, file clerks, bookkeepers, warehouse clerks, stock clerks, radio operators, teletype operators, simplex and multiplex operators. Some, too, will be trained as aviation machinists mates, gunner's mates and for torpedo maintenance

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Inside the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, preparations are underway to remove the gear boxes on the C truck of crawler-transporter 2, or CT-2. A section of the treads were removed to allow access to the gear boxes. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Space shuttle Atlantis STS-122 Mission Specialist Stanley Love awaits the final adjustments on his launch and entry suit, in astronaut crew quarters. The STS-122 crew is preparing for a simulated launch countdown aboard Atlantis, part of terminal countdown demonstration test, or TCDT, activities at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The TCDT is a dress rehearsal for launch and also provides astronauts and ground crews with equipment familiarization and emergency egress training. On mission STS-122, Atlantis will deliver the Columbus module to the International Space Station. The European Space Agency's largest single contribution to the station, Columbus is a multifunctional, pressurized laboratory that will be permanently attached to U.S. Node 2, called Harmony. The laboratory will expand the research facilities aboard the station, providing crew members and scientists from around the world the ability to conduct a variety of experiments in the physical, materials and life sciences. Launch is targeted for Dec. 6. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett KSC-07pd3408

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - An X-band radar antenna is in place to observe the MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging) launch. This antenna and a C-band radar antenna are on loan to KSC from the USNS Pathfinder, a U.S. Navy instrumentation ship. They have been installed at site north of Haulover Canal where the National Center for Atmospheric Research previously had a radar for thunderstorm research. NASA is evaluating the pair of radars for their ability to observe possible debris coming from the Space Shuttle during launch, part of NASA’s initiative to return the Space Shuttle to flight.
