The "Kinleygarten" (the mill policemen called it) at Lynchburg (Virginia) Cotton Mills. The children of the mill settlement, from six to eight years attend. Several older boys were hanging around and joining in when they could. Also a mother and babe. I asked Miss Carrington, in charge, where the children from eight to fourteen go, and she said that few of them at those ages care for education. Her mother said: "She's just taking the place of her sister (fifteen years old). Selina could earn a dollar a day. She was raised up in a cotton mill over in Belton, but she has to stay home and do the cookin." The mother and the fifteen year old girl work regularly in the mill. Several older boys work. Family Record said he was born March 12, 1900. Mattie is fourteen years old. Family Record says born November 14, 1898. Both of them have been working in a cotton mill at Laurel, Miss., for one year. Been working here for two weeks. Have steady jobs. Get about $1.25 a day. Charlie was put right to work in spite of the fact that he is in very bad shape physically. Probably malaria. Now getting $2. and is getting ready to be replaced by younger man. An ardent Socialist which has made him trouble here. Says, "I had to put one of my girls into the Mill when she was 9 yrs old, or steal. Why don't they give us enough wages to support our families? They don't intend to do that." Location: Phoenix, Alabama
