Automobile salvage. When the scrap is sorted, powerful electric cranes load it into freight cars--each type and grade in a separate car. The crane transfers the scrap from the sorted pile to the car in a matter of moments. To conserve railroad car space and time, each car is completely filled before it is shipped

[Hurricane Katrina] Empire, LA, December 7, 2005 - Debris is collected and deposited at the Plaquemines Parish Debris Grinding Site. A crane transfers the debris into the grinder where it is ground to one fourth of its original volume, sprayed with water to reduce airborne residue and travels out of the grinder by conveyor belt into a pile where it is bulldozed into a pit that can hold over 3 million cubic yards of material. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, technicians monitor the movement of the Wide Field Camera 3, or WFC3, as the overhead crane transfers it to a work stand. As Hubble enters the last stage of its life, WFC3 will be Hubble's next evolutionary step, allowing Hubble to peer ever further into the mysteries of the cosmos. WFC3 will study a diverse range of objects and phenomena, from young and extremely distant galaxies, to much more nearby stellar systems, to objects within our very own solar system. WFC3 will take the place of Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, which astronauts will bring back to Earth aboard the shuttle. WFC3 is part of the payload on the fifth and final Hubble servicing mission, STS-125, targeted for launch Oct. 8. Photo credit: NASA/Jack Pfaller KSC-08pd2396

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – A crane transfers the first stage of the United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket for NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive mission, or SMAP, into the mobile service tower at Space Launch Complex 2 on Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. SMAP will provide global measurements of soil moisture and its freeze/thaw state. These measurements will be used to enhance understanding of processes that link the water, energy and carbon cycles, and to extend the capabilities of weather and climate prediction models. SMAP data also will be used to quantify net carbon flux in boreal landscapes and to develop improved flood prediction and drought monitoring capabilities. Launch is scheduled for November 2014.
