American Red Cross - I thru M - Elizabeth McWilliams of Summerville, N.J. who sailed from New York in October as a Red Cross nurse's aid and died of pneumonia just as the ship reached the British port. She is buried not far from Red Cross Headuarters in London. There was an outbreak of influenza on the ship in which Miss McWilliams sailed. She worked hard all the first day scrubbing out the influenza-infected baggage room to provide a temporary hospital. That night she worked as an emergency cook for three hours and then until midnight wrote letters for the influenza patients. Next morning she herelf was stricken. Her last words were "I am happy because I've tried to be a real American."

American Red Cross - Uniforms - All white is the dress uniform of the Red Cross nurse in foreign service, where its wearing, for laundry purposes has to be a luxury. But sometimes a wounded man is decorated in the ward, or a General may visit; almost certainly then the nurse will wear dress uniform as a mark of honor, and one which is dramatic in its symbolism. Nurses of the Army and Navy Nurse Corps wear the same uniform, with their insignia the Caduceus of the Army or anchor of the Navy replacing the Red Cross pin. They retain the Red Cross on the cap, however, if they have entered military service from the Red Cross reserve

American Red Cross nurse in a town near the front visiting the French women whose humble house was seriously damaged by a Boche bomb. When the explosion took place these two women were in the room on the left, which was practically untouched. The room on the right was wrecked. Besides losing their home, the mind of the elderly lady was turned by the shock. The next morning while the American Red Cross representatives were visiting her, this unfortunate old soul went about the garden picking up timbers and dropping them again in the same place where she found them, thing to tidy things. Though crazed by the shock she picked her way through the little garden and picked a choice bouquet for the American Red Cross nurse who is seen in the picture holding them in her hand. The bomb spent itself in the soft earth of the garden. Otherwise both of these women would have been blown to atoms. The American Red Cross physician is seen standing in the bomb hole

American nurses bring far more than hospital skill to the wounded American soldiers in France. They speak their language, not English merely but American, understand their slang, know what they like to hear read, and when the American Red Cross Nurse and the American soldier begin talking about home, home means the same kind of a place and the same kind of folks to both. This natural sympathy is particularly important in treating cases of shell shock, the nervous result of battle, where the most perfect understanding between nurse and patient is essential. Surgeon General Gorgas has called upon the Red Cross to enroll for the Army Nurse Corps, 8,000 graduate nurses by Oct. 1st

Back to the stone age. Made homeless and destitute by the war, several hundred poor people of Montenegro were driven back to a life as primitive as that of the stone age. They took refuge in mountain catacombs and were found by American Red Cross workers with hardly any clothes, no bedding, no furniture and the crudest of stone cooking utensils. This picture shows a group of the modern cave dwellers at the entrance to the catacombs during a call of a Red Cross nurse, Miss Olivia E. Hamilton of Philadelphia. The Red Cross furnished them food and clothes, placed the sick in American hospitals in Albania, and found homes for many of the mothers and children

Albanian nurses trained by Americans. Head nurse, Miss Lucy Joachim (at right of picture) of New York City, and Miss Agnes Eubank, American Red Cross nurse to the Balkans from South Charleston, West Virginia, and four native Albanian nurses who are under their instruction in the Tirana, Albania hospital. Red Cross hospitals throughout the Balkan countries are tending to stimlate the medical and nursing professions. As in many other countries of Europe, where hospital relief work has been carried on extensively, the scientific surgical and general nurses of America have become the models for foreign women who see the possibilities of raising this profession in their countries to the American standard
