Watchdog of senate folding room has 'crop control' of own. Washington, D.C., Dec. 3. Since 1900 John W. 'Happy' Deards has been foreman of the Senate folding room which carries with it the responsibility of guarding thousands of volumes of Senate records including congressional records, agriculture yearbooks, senatorial eulogies, I.C.C. reports and books on horses and cattle. He is now wrestling with the problem of finding space for the harvest of 1938 agricultural yearbooks--35,000 volumes--shown under his feet and all around him. Deards says the books on horses and cattle which the government published in 1892 are still the most in demand of any others in the huge collection

Science and research. Mineral prospecting. Chemical prospecting for oil becomes more and more important as the war goes on the demand for oil increases. Petroleum engineers call chemical prospecting the first scientific approach to the detection of oil in the earth. The big glass condensers, with which these engineering students are working with a professor of geophysics are used in a soil analysis test. The percentage of wax left as residue at the end of the experiment indicates the nearness of petroleum to the site from which the soil sample was taken. Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado

War alarm clocks. 1,700,000 of them will be produced this year to meet demand that was normally 12,000,000. Will be distributed by all pre-war alarm clock manufacturers. War alarms are of the hand-wound type, not nearly as durable as pre-war models. The case, about 6 x 6 x 2 1/2 inches, is of molded pressed wood and paper pulp. Mechanism contains only about 1/10 ounce brass and 6 1/2 ounce of steel, compared to pre-war average use in the low-priced alarm clocks of 6 and 13 ounces respectively. For this reason, and since the programmed supply for the year will barely cover the needs of workers in directly war-essential occupations, War Production Board (WPB) has requested that no one buy a war alarm unless it satisfies real need, not merely want, wish, or whim
